Birth Art

Childbirth is an experience that stretches the mind, body, and soul.

Medical and cultural birth knowledge, so often the focus of pregnancy, is just one part of your preparation.  Instinctual knowledge and self-knowledge are usually overlooked.  Making art is a way to explore and develop the type of inner knowing that you will use during labor.  There are many parallels between making art and giving birth, including being in a state of not-knowing, activating the right brain, and struggling  between  “getting it right” and listening to intuition.  Rather than just learning about these concepts, you can embody them through Birth Art Process.  Birth Art Process can also bring light to areas where you may have conflicting beliefs, need more knowledge, or want to take action.

Birth Art Workshops are also available for birth professionals and anyone wishing to explore their relationship to birth.

Process Painting

Process Painting, or Intuitive Painting, is painting without focusing on outcome. Rather than trying to create something pretty, or beautiful, or even meaningful, the intention is to recognize and move past the fears and rules that limit you, and to find the Questions that allow you to break through.

In this workshop, I provide the painting supplies and guide you to find your Questions that will unlock your creativity.

This workshop is for anyone, pregnant or not, that wants to tune into and give free expression to their intuition. Why is this class being offered by Quetzal Birth? Process Painting embodies the kind of personal work that prepares you to move through new and unknown situation with awareness. And that is exactly what the childbearing year is all about, regardless of whether you are a new or experienced parent.

Birth Story Listening Sessions

I am studying Birth Story Listening through Birthing From Within. I invite mothers, fathers, and birth workers who want to talk about their difficult birth to contact me to set up a session. The storyteller might have feelings of anger, shame, guilt, confusion about what happened during or after her birth. This is an opportunity to look at the birth story from a new perspective and be guided in a process that will help you learn about yourself and integrate your experience of birth or becoming a parent. There is no charge for these sessions.

Living Story Workshops

Explore your own journey as you see it reflected in the elements of ancient stories.  Storytelling, lively discussion, art-making and other multi-sensory activities bring new meaning to pivotal moments in your life, creating a map of where you've been and what lies ahead.

Women's Circle

The Women's Circle is a gathering of women of all stages of life, coming together to explore and celebrate the transition of birth and motherhood.  Whether preparing to give birth for the first time, becoming a grandmother, or feeling called to explore and process previous births, I welcome you to this supportive and creative community of women.

At this monthly gathering I offer powerful processes for reflection such as living stories, birth art, process painting, and birth story listening.  We also focus on developing meaningful dialogue skills in order to deepen the way we support one another, within the circle and in our every day lives.  We co-create celebrations of our journeys.  And always we allow space for whatever arises from our collaboration.

Pain-coping practices

This workshop is an introduction to the pain-coping practices described in the book, Birthing From Within. As you continue to practice, you will become more familiar with the way your mind works and you will train your mind to respond in beneficial ways to the intensity of labor.

Birth partners are strongly encouraged to attend and develop their own practice. The experience of this workshop will help partners manage their own intensity and also be more in sync with the laboring mother.
